No Free Media. No True Democracy ...Prof Eno Ibanga submits (+VIDEO)

Prof. Eno J. Ibanga delivering his Keynote address
The Vice Chancellor of the Akwa Ibom State University, Professor Eno Ibanga has said that the role of the media in deepening democracy is indisputable. He made this assertion in a keynote address presented during the opening ceremony of the 2017 National Executive Council Meeting of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Uyo.

Speaking on the theme "The Media and Democracy: Pathway to Sustainable Development", Prof. Ibanga said that the media, particularly in Nigeria, have a crucial role to play in deepening and consolidating Nigeria’s democracy and also to engender national development. He added that the media collectively, provide the public with what he described as “windows on the world” and act as powerful agencies capable of shaping and directing public and private understanding of the world and awareness of its social, political, economic and cultural affairs.

“ contemporary democracies appreciate role of the media in holding governments accountable to the people. The notion of the media as “watchdogs” and not merely “lapdogs” is concomitant with the growth of a virile democracy, especially in Nigeria. Government cannot be held accountable entirely, if the citizens are ill-informed about the actions, inactions, programmes and policies of government.”

NUJ National President - Abdul Waheed Odusile
He used the occasion to call on the media to act as guardians of public interest and always keep the citizens alive to their responsibilities and help ensure that the ship of the state does not hit any democratic iceberg.

A veteran journalist, Mr. Ray Ekpu thanked the National President of the NUJ, Alhaji Abdulwaheed Odusile for collaborating with the Nigeria Guild of Editors to band beat journalism. He encouraged members of the Union to be proud of their Profession and endeavour to upgrade their standards with emerging information and communication technologies.

“The Press is the best instrument for enlightening the mind of man and improving him as a rational, moral and social being”
