Akwa Ibom State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Broad Based Communications Limited (BBC) for the installation, operation and maintenance of open Access Fibre Optic Telecommunications Network in Akwa Ibom State.
At the Ministry of Justice Headquarters, Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat Uyo, venue of the ceremony, the Hon. Commissioner, Ministry of Science and Technology, Dr. Nse Udo Essien signed on behalf of the State Government while, Prince Henry Iseghohi, Managing Director, Broad Based Communications Limited signed on behalf of the Company.
Speaking shortly after the signing formalities, Dr. Nse Essien explained that the exercise underscores the importance placed by Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration on ICT as an economic enabler to create jobs, alleviate poverty and fast-track the industrialization of the State. The Commissioner further stated that the State Governor is vigorously pursuing the creation of what he called “Smart State" where ICT would be deployed to virtually all segments of the economy.
Dr. Nse Essien disclosed that BroadBased Communications Limited is expected to lay fiber Optic cable to all the nine States making up the Niger Delta Region, expressing happiness that Akwa Ibom State was the first to sign an MOU with the company. He expressed optimism that the project when completed, would form the main ICT back bone infrastructure needed to drive internet, inter- connectivity, e- commerce, e-governance as well as revolutionize the ICT landscape of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.
The Commissioner lauded Governor Udom Emmanuel for placing high premium on the development of Science and Technology in the State and pledged the readiness of his Ministry to work assiduously to enable the Governor actualizes his dream of making Akwa Ibom State an ICT hub.
The Managing Director Broad Based Communications Limited, Prince Henry Iseghohi said Broad Based Communications Company has the requisite, professional and technical expertise in installation, operation and maintenance of Telecommunication Network. Prince Iseghohi expressed gratitude to Akwa Ibom State Governor for the opportunity given the company to contribute to the industrialization programme of Governor Udom Emmanuel led administration.
