Comrade Kufre Ededet Akpanikot- Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Joint Campus Committee

The crises that rocked the Akwa Ibom State Chapter of National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) Joint Campus Committee has finally been resolved with the dissolution of all existing factions and election of Comrade kufre Ededet Akpanikot, President of Akwa Ibom State University Students Union Government as the substantive Chairman of the State Joint Campus Committee. This was the outcome of an extra ordinary Senate Meeting of the revolutionary students’ body which held in Uyo last Tuesday and attended by Presidents of NANS affiliated tertiary institutions located in Akwa Ibom State.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and endorsed by 10 SUG Presidents, the frontline students group dissolved the incumbent leadership of the Association, resolved to return power to the SUG Presidents who doubles as Senators of NANS and whose sole responsibility it is to usually elect NANS leaders at all levels, and further called on security agencies to arrest and prosecute impostors and those who fraudulently parade as student leaders when they have not been so elected and or appointed.

According to the communiqué, “After complex deliberations, and the collective position read by the President of University Of Uyo, Comrade Kufre Samuel, the meeting through a motion moved and Seconded by the President of Akwa Ibom State University and Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Kufre Ededet Akpanikot and Kingsley Eyo respectively, dissolved the incumbent leadership of NANS Joint Campus Committee, Akwa Ibom axis which has been engulfed in factional crises over the last few months and which repeated efforts to resolve has been futile. The meeting further mandated the Student Union Government Presidents to re-take the leadership of the state JCC and nominate a new Chairman from amongst them. Consequently, Comrade Kufre Ededet Akpanikot of Akwa Ibom State University was nominated and elected as the substantive State Chairman of the Joint Campus Committee”.

Continuing, the communiqué added, “The meeting further urged Security agencies to take serious note of these developments and don’t hesitate to arrest and apprehend any person or group of persons who impersonate or falsely represent to the public as members or officers of the state JCC. Individuals, politicians and other interest groups who take pride in funding parallel student bodies as a way of fomenting crises are also strongly warned to desist forthwith or risk the unpalatable consequences and actions of students”

Elsewhere in the communiqué, the student leaders strongly commended Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel for ‘his avowed commitment to the economic wellbeing of Akwa Ibom people, coupled with his undiluted sensitivity to the welfare of great Nigerian students and their quality of education’ and promised to support his cause till the year 2023

The meeting was observed by ranking NANS officials and a section of security agencies including the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services, Peace on Campus Initiative and the media, and attended by Students Union Presidents from Uyo City Polytechnic, Maritime Academy of Nigeria, MAURID Polytechnic, Akwa Ibom State College of Arts and Science, Schools of Nursing/Midwifery, Akwa Ibom State University, College of Education, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, University of Uyo, National Open University of Nigeria and the School of Health Technology.
